Microsoft announced that Windows 7 will go into its end of life phase on Jan 14th 2020.
From that day forward Mircosoft will stop supporting Windows 7 on laptops and desktops and will no longer provide patches with security updates. Essentially, the company will no longer support Windows 7 operating systems or applications. PC’s and applications will become more susceptible to virus and bugs. If you develop any bugs or things go wrong, you will not be able to seek help from Microsoft.
What does that mean for you?
Windows 7 is still a prevalent operating system. Ten years after its release, it is still used by millions globally. Windows 10 only became the most popular version of Windows in the last quarter of 2018. It is estimated that there are over 300 million globally who are still using Windows 7. Any of those who do not update their operating systems will be a risk for cyber attacks and being targeted by hackers.
The end of life for Windows 7 has been well publicised. Hackers have had plenty of opportunities to find ways to exploit the vulnerable system after Jan 14th next year.
Applications running on Windows 10.
While no one is stopping third-party developers supporting Windows 7, it is more than likely that developers will focus their attention on to Windows 10 for all third-party applications. This could mean applications you are using could be unserviceable.
Moving to Windows 10.
If you want to upgrade to Windows 10, you can do so, as long as you have a PC that meets all the requirements for the Windows 10 operating system. If your PC does not meet those requirements, you may need to think about buying a new machine.
